Robert Fitzgerald was born in Fargo, North Dakota, in 1976 when his parents, John and Susan Fitzgerald lived south of Lake Park, Minnesota. When he was one year old, they moved to Bismarck, North Dakota, where his sister, Kelly, was born. Robert also has a brother, Michael, who was born in Grand Forks, North Dakota. From grade school to present, Robert has been a Minnesota resident.
Fitzgerald received his bachelor's degree from the University of Minnesota, Morris, in Computer Science and his Masters degree in Business Administration from the University of Mary in Fargo, North Dakota. He resigned in March as the Executive Director of Access Television, a public, education, and government access television facility in order to pursue the campaign full time.
Robert served on the board of the Fergus Falls Convention and Visitor's Bureau and has been a board member of the local Kiwanis club. Robert is an active member of the Fergus Falls area Jaycees too. He is a member of the Dalton Pioneer Threshermen's Association, and has enjoyed the wealth of information and learning opportunities afforded him by other members regarding his 1940's Farmall H tractor. Robert is a member of the Sons of the American Legion. He was invited to join in Morris Minnesota, through the service of his grandfather, Judge Ralph B. Maxwell, ret., in World War II.
As a teenager, Robert participated in amateur boxing and now gives back to the club by volunteering as ringside announcer for local bouts. Robert has both coached and officiated youth soccer.
Fitzgerald has a pioneer spirit and enjoys adventure. In 2000, he embarked on a 2100 mile solo bicycle trip from Minneapolis to Portland, Oregon, via Seattle, Washington, on US 2. He has traveled widely in the United States and abroad.
In 2001, Fitzgerald planned and executed a benefit concert for the University of Minnesota, Morris student-run radio station attracting 18 bands and artists from across the United States and Canada. Prior to the event, he held numerous management positions at the radio station, including manager.
In 2002, Fitzgerald was hired as the Executive Director of a public, education, government access channel in Fergus Falls, MN and expanded the facility and services from a classroom at the local community college to an award-winning facility proven to be a model for access centers in Greater Minnesota. Robert works closely with local government, schools, and community organizations.
Fitzgerald owns a hobby farm north of Fergus Falls and resides in Rothsay.
Robert has been a licensed therapeutic foster care parent for the past four years. He has shared his home with many children. In 2004 his foster son graduated from Fergus Falls Senior High.
Robert is running because he is concerned that young people are being left out of the decision-making process. He sees communities struggling to provide good jobs for their young people, all the while their futures are being saddled with overwhelming debt; National, Social Security, Medicaid, school loans, rising housing costs, healthcare costs, and transportation costs.
Fitzgerald believes communities across Minnesota are facing these issues and he's ready to champion causes which support Greater Minnesota and all Minnesotans in the US Senate.
Fitzgerald believes in paying down our National Debt, substantially reducing our dependency on foreign oil, and investing in our children. Fitzgerald believes in returning fairness and balance to a government over-run with special interest legislation.
